Golestan Palace complex and museum in Tehran

Golestan palace complex in Tehran

Golestan Palace and Gardens is a splendid complex housing some magnificent monuments that will take you back in time to Gajar era. This complex was constructed during the reign of King Tahmasb the first (1524-1576), a Safavid King, then renovated by Karim Khan of Zand. When Tehran was selected as the capital of the country by Mohammad Khan of Qajar, this complex turned into the central realm of Qajar where royal family dwelled. What you will visit at this era was rebuilt in 1856.
There are 17 structures in this complex such as halls, museums, and palaces. Gajar kings constructed almost all parts of this complex during their reign.
Fath Ali-Shah commanded to build Marble throne or Takht-e-Marmar in 1806 which is an exquisite terrace. You will see the epitome of Iranian art carved on this terrace.
Karim Khan-e Zand's Nook or Khalvat-e Karim Khani was built in 1759. There is a small throne in it, but it is not as artistic and ornamented as the marble throne. It was used as a private place for Naser-al-Din Shah where he spent most of his time.
Pond House or Howz Khane houses the works of European painters which were given to Gajar kings as gifts. This place was used in the summer.
Negar Khane or Gallery houses many artifacts that were collected by Naser-a- din King because of his tremendous interest in art. His interest was mainly because of his tours to Europe and seeing many museums and galleries. Many of the collections are divided and sent to be housed in other royal palaces and museums, yet, you will find all the paintings housed in Golestan palace. Besides, European paintings are kept in the Picture house.
Brilliant House is where you will find many embellished mirror works molded by Iranian artists. This hall is celebrated because of its majestic chandeliers and mirror work.
Built by Mohamad Embrahim Khan-e-Memar Bashi, Museum of gifts is where you will find many magnificent objects which were given to Gajar kings as gifts such as Helmet of Ismail Shah of Safavid, King Nader's bow and arrow, Fath Ali King's armband etc. There are some other museums and halls where you can find many china works and artifacts.
