National Museum of Iran

National Museum of Iran

Situated in Tehran, National Museum of Iran is an organization housing two complexes: the Museum of Ancient Iran which was started in 1937 and the Museum of Post-Islamic Era which was started in 1972. In this comlex historical monuments, ancient antiques such as some old books, metal objects, pottery vessels, textile remains and coins. There are some departments in this museum like department of Paleolithic and Osteology, and a center for Pottery Studies.
It was in early 20th century that Andre Godard designed the building wall of the Museum of Ancient Iran. Sassanid Vaults influenced this architect to a great degree. Abbas Ali Memar and Morad Tabrizi completed constructing this building which was started in 1935, and the official start of this complex was in 1937.
Museum of the (post-) Islamic Era which was built later than the Museum of Ancient Iran, was built with white travertine carpteted the grassy grounds of the Museum of Ancient Iran. Some changes are made to inner side with haste and when Islamic Recolution took the country by storm, some parts were remodeled.
Although the Museum of Ancient Iran always had a transparent authoritative command to illustrate archaeological relics, besides some rare medieval textiles and rug pieces, some excellent Amlash pottery from the prehistoric Caspian Sea regions of Iran were exhibited in the newer building, and also the excellent Amlash pottery from the prehistoric Caspian Sea regions of Iran are shown. Some modern arts came after these, remodeling the interior side was repeated.
The older building consists of three halls. The halls contain artifacts and fossils from the lower, middle, and upper Paleolithic, as well as the Neolithic, Chalcolithic, early and late Bronze Age, and Iron Ages I-III, through the Median, Achaemenid, Seleucid, Parthian, and Sassanid periods.
There are three floors in the Museum of the (post-) Islamic Era. From Iran's post-Islamic era, you can find different and colorful pieces of pottery, textiles, texts, different works of art, , and adobe, astrolabes, calligraphy.
There are some plans to build other buildings, as the usual ones don't have the enough room and criteria for protecting all of the treasures that are excavated. There are more than 300,000 artifacts.

Collections

Kashafrud, Darband and Ganj Par are the sites where the artifacts are found and excavated, the Lower Paleolithic period is where these artifacts date back. In the first hall of the Museum of Ancient Iran, you ca also see 'Mousterian stone tools' built by Neanderthals.The Yafteh Cave is the most significant place where Upper Paleolithic tools are found, they date back about 30,000-35,000 years. Among many other ancient artifacts you can find 9000 year-old old human and animal figurines from Sarab Hill in Kermanshah Province that come from Kermanshah Province.

Exhibitions

The ground floor of the newer building houses contemporary exhibitions of the museum's collections. The exhibition galleries which are temporary are shown two or three times yearly, and they are open about one to two months. Evidence for Two Hundred Thousand Years of Human-Animal Bonds in Iran which is one of the most important and successful exhibitions was open from August to October 2014. The exhibition mainly featured the relation and different animal species and different lives of past human societies in Iran, since the late Lower Paleolithic to newer modern days.
