Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art

Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art

Known as TMoCA, Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art is one of the biggest art museums in Iran. You can find over 3000 items, like drawings and sculptures, American and European paintings that are for 19th and 20th century, etc. It was two years prior to Islamic revolution that the queen, Farah Pahlavi, founded this museum in 1977. In this museum, you can find many valuable collections of modern great works of art which are outside North America and Europe.
Kamran Diba, an Iranian architect designed the museum. Started in 1977, it was constructed near Laleh Park, Tehran. Built like the form of underground New York Guggenheim Museum. The building itself is considered as a contemporary art. With a circular steps winding down, you will find most of the museum underground with galleries protruding outward. Following the Iranian Revolution in 1979, the Western art was put away in the museum vault. In 1999, works of artists such as Andy Warhol, Hockney, Rauschenburg and Lichtenstein were exhibited. In some weeks, some of the western arts are illustrated to the public. This museum is known to have the most admired array of Western modern art outside Europe and America. With the support of Farah Pahlavi, founding curators like David Galloway and Donna Stein, this collection was assembled. Around £2.5 billion is said to be the value of modern art kept at this place.
